Ballet Black, founded by Cassa Pancho, is dedicated to diversifying classical ballet. Since its founding in 2001, this company of black and Asian classically trained dancers has been much acclaimed for its virtuoso and bravura dance and its showcasing of technique, precision and grace in specially-commissioned pieces.
This mixed programme features The Suit, choreographed by Cathy Marston, who is renowned for her expressive and beautifully crafted work. Inspired by Can Themba’s South African fable of the same name, Marston’s ballet is set to music brought together by composer Philip Feeney.
Completing the evening will Ingoma (Song), created by company dancer and choreographer Mthuthuzeli November is a fusion of ballet, African dance, and singing. This premiere and Barbican co-commission portrays a milestone moment in South African history and imagines the struggles of black miners and their families in 1946 when 60,000 of them took courageous strike action.
