Hackney Empire 2025, Ballet Black: SHADOWS
Date: 13 Mar 2025 - 15 Mar 2025
Time: 7:30 pm
Location: Hackney Empire
Cassa Pancho’s Ballet Black return to Hackney Empire with the darkly comic adaptation of international bestselling novel, My Sister, The Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite.
When Korede gets a distress call from her sister Ayoola, she knows what to do: bleach, rubber gloves, nerves of steel, and a strong stomach. It’s the third boyfriend Ayoola has killed in ‘self-defense,’ and the third mess Korede has to clean up. She should probably go to the police, but family comes first. Things change, though, when Ayoola starts dating the doctor Korede has loved for years. Korede can’t let him be the next victim – but saving him might mean betraying her sister…
Brooklyn-born, award-winning choreographer, Chanel DaSilva is known for using the power of the arts to inspire change. Her work has been commissioned by renowned companies like The Washington Ballet, Parsons Dance Company, and Dallas Black Dance Theatre. DaSilva made history as the first Black woman to choreograph for The Joffrey Ballet. Her work delves into what it means to be human, with a focus on driving positive change in both the dance world and beyond. For her debut ballet for Cassa Pancho’s Ballet Black, DaSilva explores the intense practice of shadow work and how it can reveal our true selves.
Ballet Black has transformed the landscape of British ballet, creating a prominent platform for dancers and artists of Black and Asian descent, as well as establishing a new canon of ballet repertoire that resonates with audiences around the world.
As the saying goes, “If you can’t see it, you can’t be it.” Well, where ballet audiences… remain almost invariably overwhelmingly white, this company’s, as Friday proved, are quite the opposite. “What’s the point of Ballet Black?” That is.” The Telegraph
