‘Jesus Christ Bananas!’

by Cassa Pancho   “Jesus Christ Bananas!” (The Beav in Dreamcatcher, Stephen King, 2001) Sometimes things just happen that are so irritating, yet so ridiculous that the only thing you can do is blaspheme, add fruit and leave to simmer… An Incident occurred recently, and all I can really tell you is this; we had a magazine interview with a photo-shoot, it all went fantastically well, then we had an hour and a half break when, completely unrelated to the photo-shoot, a dancer tripped and got injured. Her ballet teacher got upset with...

‘That Kind of Month’

by Cassa Pancho   June Diary I think I begin every diary in this way, so forgive the repetition, but the past eight weeks or so have been f****** awful and bloody amazing. I shall try to keep it brief, though I can’t say the same for the expletives. It’s just been that kind of month. “I love black people, but I hate niggers” Chris Rock – Bring the Pain HBO TV Special, USA, 1997 At the beginning of June, I saw Monster’s Ball, the movie starring Halle Berry and Billy Bob Thornton. by Cassa Pancho Ballet School On the 20th of April, the Ballet School finally opened. I dragged Hugo (the Ballet Black web-designer) along for moral support and we arrived in Shepherds Bush at 9:30am – with the first class due to start at 10 o’clock. At 9:45 everything was set up and ready to go, except the brand new stereo wouldn’t work. Of course that was probably because both Hugo and I had missed the enormous ON/OFF switch at the back (his fault entirely – he IS the technical genius after all). Once that was sorted,...

Blue None

by Cassa Pancho   “Cassa Pancho in London and drinking too much Blue Nun probably!” Well. As hilarious as this is, it is, fortunately, untrue. The past month has been spent doing things that are too boring to write about in detail, but are exceedingly important to the Company and the way it progresses – so, at the risk of sounding like a Big Boring Book of Ballet Technique… Starting a black ballet company probably sounds, to many people, like an impossible thing to do. Add to that the lack of black dancers available,...

Another Quiet Month

Another Quiet Month

by Cassa Pancho I’m writing this after coming out of company class, but I’ll talk about that in a minute… It has been quiet, but in a good way. By that I mean that things seem to be progressing slowly, but definitely surely. We lost a couple of dancers this month – but they seem to be a bit like buses – you lose one and another pops up from somewhere else. There has also been triumph over death, in that a new church administrator has risen from the ashes and declared that the hall (mentioned a couple of months ago)...
