May-July Diary 2003

by Cassa Pancho   Boyz in the Halloumi You might think it would take a director of great magnitude to achieve such inter-cultural, gettin’ down in the community to unite the casts of Boyz in the Hood with My Big Fat Greek Wedding – interspersed with the dancers of Ballet Black – but it been CAN be done. On one of the more gorgeously sunny days we’ve been having recently, Ballet Black’s company class and rehearsal was due to take place at the Ballet School location in Shepherd’s Bush. All the very adorable...

March-May Diary 2003

by Cassa Pancho   It has been a strange and hectic time for Ballet Black of late. I won’t bore you with the details, but I’ve been quite unwell for about a month or so and as such, haven’t been able to be at every class, rehearsal or meeting. The ensuing result; absolute bloody chaos. I returned to find one dancer ready to quit, one about to have surgery and one still waiting at the 239 bus stop (another long story, almost worthy of its own diary. Another time, really). All in all, a bit of a mess. Happily, this was sorted with a...

A talk was held at Sadlers Wells to discuss the lack of black dancers in ballet and amazingly, I was...

December Diary 2002

by Cassa Pancho   Well. This has been one hell of a few of months. If beginning a dance company can be compared to literature, then I would have to liken Ballet Black to the work of Sophocles. Greek Tragedy a-go-go (d’ya think he would’ve put it like that?) Paper-Pushing In October, I was at such a weird level of stress that I actually developed a slight sta-a-a-a-a-mmer whenever I got frustrated or nervous and had a continuous tremor in my hands. The sheer amount of work that goes into just the administrational side of things –...

September/October Diary 2002

by Cassa Pancho Fundraiser December the eighth will be the first ever, official performance for Ballet Black. Our line up includes three ballets, choreographed by Denzil, Daniel and myself and each will be performed to live music. Its purpose is obviously to raise some money for BB, as well as give people an idea of where we are now, and where we could be in the future, given the right support. I can’t quite believe how much and how many people we’ve pulled together in such a small space of time. In addition to the live music, we’re...
